Q:
How does a U-Chart handle variable sample sizes?
The u-chart measures defects per inspection unit: uᵢ = cᵢ / nᵢ.
Because inspection area nᵢ varies, control limits adjust dynamically for each sample:
UCLᵢ = ū + 3√(ū / nᵢ), LCLᵢ = Max(0, ū - 3√(ū / nᵢ))
Average Rate (ū)5.891Total Defects / Total Units
Total Samples10Inspection Lots
Limit TypeVariable Limitsū ± 3√(ū/nᵢ)
Defects Per Unit with Variable Inspection Areas
When the quantity or area of inspection fluctuates (such as varying square meters of rolled steel or different numbers of assemblies inspected per hour), the u-chart standardizes the count to a per-unit basis.
