Q:
How is Defects Per Million Opportunities (DPMO) converted into a Sigma level?
First compute the defect fraction p = D / (N × O), then convert via the inverse standard normal cumulative distribution Φ⁻¹(1 - p).
In Six Sigma convention, a 1.5σ shift is added to account for long-term process drift:
Sigma Level = Φ⁻¹(1 - Defect Rate) + 1.5
For example, 3.4 DPMO yields exactly a 6.0σ quality rating.

The 1.5 Sigma Shift Explained
Pioneered by Motorola quality engineers in the 1980s, empirical research showed that processes drift by an average of 1.5 standard deviations over long production runs due to tool wear, ambient temperature swings, material batch changes, and operator variation.
