Q:

How does Acceptance Quality Limit (AQL) determine sample size and accept/reject numbers?

Under ANSI/ASQ Z1.4 and ISO 2859-1, lot size N and Inspection Level (typically Level II Normal) index into a Sample Size Code Letter (A through R). That letter specifies exact inspection sample size n and maximum allowable defects Ac before the lot must be rejected at Re = Ac + 1.
Accept lot if defects ≤ Ac; Reject lot if defects ≥ Re

Acceptance sampling provides statistical confidence that incoming supplier shipments or outgoing finished goods lots meet contractual quality standards without incurring the massive expense of 100% destructive or manual sorting.
