Q:

When is an X-bar and S chart preferred over an X-bar and R chart?

Use an X-bar and S chart when subgroup sample sizes are large (n ≥ 10, or variable n) because sample standard deviation S is a significantly more efficient estimator of process dispersion than the sample range R. Limits use c4 unbiasing: σ̂ = S̄ / c4.

High-Sample Subgroup Precision (n ≥ 10)

For modern automated manufacturing with multi-cavity molds, automated inspection machines, or high-speed stamping, collecting subgroups of 10, 15, or 25 parts is common. The sample standard deviation S avoids the extreme value sensitivity of the range R, preserving statistical power.
